Kohta Takahashi (Japanese: 高橋 コウタ, Takahashi Kōta) is a Japanese musician who is best known for composing music for many different Bandai Namco games like the Ace Combat series, the Klonoa series, the Ridge Racer series and Tekken 5. Takahashi is now serving as a guest composer for the official Friday Night Funkin' soundtrack and has co-composed the ERECT remixes for Fresh and High with Saruky and Kawai Sprite, respectively.

Involvement

The idea of getting a guest composer for Friday Night Funkin' was pitched and teased as early as the Kickstater campaign on the 18th of April, 2021. In a now-deleted tweet from Kawai Sprite on the 4th of December, he stated that the ERECT remixes for Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, and Week 5 were completed, and that some of the songs were remixed by "some people [the audience] might know... or not..."[1] On the 1st of June, 2022, ninjamuffin99 would tease that the ERECT remix of High was composed by a guest composer.[2] Later that day, PhantomArcade would follow-up on that tweet and leave two hints on the identity of the guest composer. One of them was that the person was from "one of [his] favorite games" and another was that he "worked with a translator through the process."[3] On the 6th, PhantomArcade did a stream on Twitch titled "what the funk is going on WORK, WORK IS GOING ON!!" in which he revealed that the developers were working with a "classic video game musician" to handle the ERECT remixes for High and Fresh.[4] ninjamuffin99 would reiterate this on the 12th of September, 2023.[5]

Nothing more concrete about guest composers would occur until the 20th of March, 2024, when the @FNF_Developers Twitter account would release a teaser trailer and album called the Erect Sampler, signifying that Friday Night Funkin' was set to return. In this tweet, Kohta Takahashi was listed as one of the guest composers, along with the band Six Impala.[6] In the Erect Sampler, it was revealed that he was the one to do the ERECT remix for High, alongside Kawai Sprite.[7] His ERECT remix for Fresh was teased twice until its full release on the 30th of April, 2024, with the release of the WeekEnd 1 update.

Trivia

  • Prior to Takahashi's official involvement with Friday Night Funkin', his song "Urban Fragments" (composed for R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 with vocals by Kimara Lovelace) was charted by ninjamuffin99 and existed in the files as an unused track named Ridge.
